Il buon nome, mio caro signore, sia per l’uomo
che per la donna, è la gemma più preziosa dell’anima.
Se uno mi ruba la borsa, mi ruba una cosa
che ha sì un certo valore, ma in fondo senza grande
importanza: il denaro era mio, ora è suo,
come prima era stato di mille altri. Chi invece
ruba il mio buon nome, mi porta via una cosa
che non fa ricco lui e impoverisce me.

Is the immediate jewel of their souls:
Who steals my purse steals trash; ’tis something,
[nothing;]
’Twas mine, ’tis his, and has been slave to thousands:
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him,
